Historic Feminist Press Seeks New Executive Director and Publisher

NEW YORK, NY— Feminist Press Executive Director and Publisher Jennifer Baumgardner is ending her tenure on May 31, 2017. While we are deeply saddened by her departure, it is with great excitement that we begin the search for a visionary new leader.

Baumgardner served as director of the Press since 2013, overseeing the creation of groundbreaking initiatives such as Anastasia Higginbotham’s Ordinary Terrible Things children’s book series, the annual Feminist Ball, STEMinism, the Louise Meriwether First Book Prize for a debut author of color, and Amethyst Editions, an imprint curated by queer lit luminary Michelle Tea. Baumgardner was instrumental in the Presspublishing and producing multiple runs of the critically-acclaimed plays SLUT and NOW THAT WE’RE MEN by Katie Cappiello. She published authors such as Sarah Schulman (The Cosmopolitans), Ana Castillo (Black Dove), and Dr. Brittney Cooper (The Crunk Feminist Collection), ushering in the strongest sales the Press has had in years.

“Working for the Feminist Press at CUNY has been an honor,” says Baumgardner. “I am grateful for Florence Howe’s vision, the support and energy of the board, and the awesome staff. FP is the longest-running women’s press in the world, and I know that it will be around for a long, long time.”

“The Feminist Press executive directorship is an incredible job, positioned at the apex of publishing and feminist activism,” says Baumgardner. “The director is the face and voice of the press—a publisher, a fundraiser, a visionary, and a manager. It’s a challenging and meaningful position.”

“With profound gratitude and appreciation, we wish Jennifer Baumgardner continued success in her future endeavors. As the Feminist Press nears its fiftieth anniversary, we look forward to considering candidates for the Publisher /Executive Director position, on behalf of new opportunities for our authors and readers,” said Board Chair Rebecca Seawright. The Feminist Press thanks Baumgardner for her dedication, vision, and commitment to its mission.

The application period for the position is open now and will be posted until March 23, 2017.
