APPRENTICESHIP

Feminist Press Apprenticeship Program
Apply by Friday, January 3

Apprentices are key members of the FP team and make significant contributions to our organization. They are involved in every level of our work, from proofreading forthcoming books to mailing advanced review copies, and juggle a wide variety of tasks that require a significant degree of responsibility. Our ideal candidate is a self-starter, eager to learn, detail-oriented, and passionate about our mission. Prior office experience is helpful, as is any prior experience in publishing, editing, book sales, etc. A good knowledge of our list and an understanding of intersectional feminism is essential.

The Press is run by a small, dedicated team, and we all work diligently toward our vision of creating a world where everyone sees themselves in books. It is important to each and every staff member to create meaningful mentor relationships with our apprentices and to support their careers beyond the semester’s work. Apprentices will report to the Director of Community Engagement. They will also work in collaboration with staff at all levels of the organization, across all departments.

This spring, we are looking to hire two NYC-area-based apprentices to work a hybrid schedule of both remote and in-person days.

Apprenticeship responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:

  • General office management and mailing duties including galley and finished book mailing, website order fulfillment, processing incoming shipments, supporting with inventory management, organization of in-office storage and supplies, and other hands-on projects

  • Providing on-site support at select author events, book fairs, and festivals

  • Proofreading forthcoming manuscripts and other office collateral and tracking changes

  • Assisting in the creation of social media content including graphics and product photos

  • Preparing award applications

  • Drafting marketing copy including press releases, galley letters, and reading group guides

Due to COVID-19, the Feminist Press team has a hybrid office policy. We are seeking candidates who are able to commute to our midtown-based office 1-2 times per week. No international candidates.

All applicants should understand that this role requires occasional manual labor throughout the day, including shelving books, bending, lifting boxes, packing boxes, and standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.

Feminist Press apprentices are paid $16.50 per hour and are expected to work 18 hours each week. The spring 2024 program begins in mid-February and runs through June (15 weeks total). The apprenticeship requires a commitment of three days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. Although we are flexible with schedules, we do ask for a consistent weekly time commitment. Additional hours will be provided on an ad-hoc basis for special events, as apprentice schedules allow.

The deadline to apply is Friday, January 3. All interviews will be conducted via phone or Zoom.

Application instructions:

—Email your resume and a cover letter explaining why you’d like to work at the Feminist Press to apprenticeship[at]feministpress[dot]org. Be sure to include your contact information, current address, and availability.

—Include the names and contact information of two references.

We have many wonderful applicants and as a result, are only able to respond to those candidates who are invited for an interview.
