Apprenticeship
Feminist Press Apprenticeship Program
Apprentices are key members of the FP team and make significant contributions to our organization. They are involved in every level of our work, from proofreading forthcoming books to mailing advanced review copies, and juggle a wide variety of tasks that require a significant degree of responsibility. Our ideal candidate is a self-starter, eager to learn, detail-oriented, and passionate about our mission. Prior office experience is helpful, as is any prior experience in publishing, editing, book sales, etc. A good knowledge of our list and an understanding of intersectional feminism is essential.
The Press is run by a small, dedicated team, and we all work diligently toward our vision of creating a world where everyone sees themselves in books. It is important to each and every staff member to create meaningful mentor relationships with our apprentices and to support their careers beyond the semester’s work.
FP offers three apprenticeship positions in the spring and fall semesters of each year. This spring, we are looking to hire both remote and hybrid in-person candidates. Hybrid candidates will need to commute to our office in midtown Manhattan at least once per week and are welcome to work in the office more frequently.
Apprentices will report to the Director of Community Engagement at Feminist Press. They will also work in collaboration with staff at all levels of the organization, across all departments.
We are honored to announce the Deonne Kahler Apprenticeship. Former Feminist Press apprentice and staff member Deonne Kahler has pledged to sponsor one apprentice per semester, beginning in Spring 2026. We are grateful to Deonne for this immensely meaningful support.
Other supporters of the Feminist Press apprenticeship program include Judith Gold Stitzel, whose generous gift will fund one apprentice for the Spring 2026 semester.
Apprenticeship responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:
-
Proofreading forthcoming manuscripts and other office collateral; tracking changes; reviewing unsolicited and agented submissions for editors on staff; writing reader’s reports; and participating in staff-wide editorial meetings.
-
Drafting marketing copy including press releases, galley letters, and reading group guides; creating academic and library marketing lists; preparing award applications; and creating social media content and copy.
-
General administrative and mailing duties including galley and finished book mailing and website order fulfillment
-
+ for in-person candidates: processing incoming shipments, supporting with inventory management, organization of in-office storage and supplies, and other hands-on projects
-
Attending team meetings including production, promotions, development, and more
Feminist Press spring apprentices will be paid $17 per hour and are expected to work 18 hours each week. The spring 2026 program begins in late January and runs through mid-May (15 weeks total). The apprenticeship requires a commitment of three days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour unpaid lunch break. Although we are flexible with schedules, we do ask for a consistent weekly time commitment.
The deadline to apply is November 14. All interviews will be conducted via phone or Zoom.
