A message from FP founder Florence Howe’s granddaughter

Dear friends of Feminist Press,

Most people know Florence Howe as a larger-than-life feminist icon, the founder of Feminist Press and the “mother of women’s studies.”

To me, she was Grandma Florence.

I’ve always seen Feminist Press as my cool older sister—ten years older than I am, I grew up immersed in its books and buoyed by its feminist ideals. As a child, I remember reading the picture book The Dragon and the Doctor by Barbara Danish, the Press’s first publication and the first picture book to feature a female doctor. I’m a doctor now, so the message must have stuck!

When Florence passed away in 2020, I lost my familial connection to Feminist Press. But I knew that the Press’s feminist legacy, the books it publishes, and its mission of uplifting insurgent and marginalized voices is still vital today.

That’s why this year, I joined the Board of Directors, so I can continue the project that my grandmother dedicated her life to. I want to be part of publishing the books that inspire the next generation of feminists, and I’m so excited to see what this next chapter will bring.

Will you join me in supporting Feminist Press today?

With gratitude,

Florence Wright, MD
Board Member, Feminist Press Board of Directors
