Announcing the Deonne Kahler Apprenticeship
Feminist Press is thrilled to announce the Deonne Kahler Apprenticeship: a sponsored seat for two aspiring feminist publishing professionals to serve as apprentices at Feminist Press each year, beginning in 2026. For over twenty years, Feminist Press’s apprenticeship program has introduced newcomers to the industry on the ins and outs of working at a feminist publisher. The Deonne Kahler Apprenticeship will help keep this program . . .
- Accessible: Our apprentices come from across the US and have the option of working remotely or hybrid—breaking down the traditional gatekeeping structures that have made NYC the center of publishing.
- Educational: Apprentices work across departments to learn the ropes of editorial, production, marketing, publicity, and more, and receive specialized one-on-one feedback from Feminist Press staff that includes a resume workshop and brown bag seminars.
-
Transformative: Former apprentices have gone on to secure publishing jobs at HarperCollins, FSG, Soho Press, New Directions, Cornell University Press, Words Without Borders, and more.

Deonne Kahler says, “I started out as a Feminist Press intern in 2008, and quickly fell in love with the mission, the team, and the environment. I was in grad school for creative writing at the time, and the Press ended up hiring me as their administrative manager, which allowed me to also run the intern program. It was a transformative time for me personally and for my career as a multidisciplinary creative. I’m in a position now where I can give back, and am thrilled to be able to sponsor two apprentices every year. My hope is they receive the excellent mentorship and experience I did, that will set them on a solid course for their own creative careers.”
Other support for the apprenticeship program comes from Judith Gold Stitzel, who will sponsor one apprentice in the Spring 2026 semester.
